Romania's Cinema can be seen through three distinct phases: The Early Years, The Communist Era, and the Post Communist Era. With each of these eras came the continuous paradox of making film in Romania. In each phase that the film industry in Romania there was either a problem with funding, skill or freedom of speech. The Early Years which lasted from 1890 up till WWII there was funding for the industry, and the freedom of speech to create films of any content; but there was a lack of skill in this new medium to create and produce films. The Communist Era lasted from shortly after WWII till 1990. With the Communist Era the film industry in Romania became a Nationalized entity. The Nationalization of the industry prevented freedom of speech for film makers. The Catch-22 of the industry continues with the studios having the funds, and skills to create the films but lack the freedom of choosing the content for their films. The Post-Communist Era starts in the 1990's and continues till today. It is known as the New Wave of the Romanian Film Industry, but sill suffers from the paradox. The industry today has the freedom of content, the skills to create the medium but lacks the funds. Still the industry has managed to produce rather successful films.
